The Two of Them
Poland
by Grzegorz Kuchta
Published April 2025
For ten months, photographer Grzegorz Kuchta observed the life of Iza, a woman who, despite her oncological disease, devotes herself to caring for her son Max, who has an advanced case of autism spectrum disorder.
This is a story of love, determination, and devotion. Although it is told with personal and intimate photos, it was created with the hope that it will bring us closer to the problems of those affected by autism. It will make us realize that although they behave differently, they are the same as us. They have dreams and passions, and the only thing they expect from others is acceptance and understanding of their differences.
Max is 23 years old. Boys of his age often become adults, finish their education, work, and discover the world. In this case, however, the son constantly needs his mother's care. Every day, they leave the house to tame the world and make it more friendly to the sick boy.
Grzegorz Kuchta
Grzegorz Kuchta is a doctor who has been photographing for a long time and is constantly open to new techniques or directions in photography.
He lives in Gdansk, Poland, where he mainly photographs, exploring themes in conversation with humanity.
He is passionate about documentary photography, especially of the men in the world around him and the state of humanity in today’s world.
He carries out long-term documentary projects as well as short-term, single reportage projects– all of which can be found in his portfolio. He is also interested in artistic photography - nature, but also from the borderline of abstraction, which is unlimited.
The most important aspects of Kuchta’s photography are the emotions, feelings, sensitivities, and a deep sense of humanism.
His current long-term project, entitled "The Two of Them," aims to bring us closer to the problems of those who have been affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Over the 10 months of this project, Kuchta realized that although in behavior, they are the same as us. They have dreams, passion, and the only thing they expect from others is acceptance and understanding of their differences.
This project's main goal is to tell the story of people whose voices are most often ignored. As a documentary photographer, Kuchta focuses on their stories, emotions, and everyday life.
Well done! Great photographs!
Sad. There is a third person - a photographer who was able to tell us this story.
